Benholm is a scattered settlement in the southeast of the Scottish Council Area Aberdeenshire . It is located around four kilometers southwest of Inverbervie and 14 kilometers northeast of Montrose near the North Sea coast. It is divided into the settlement areas Benholm , Nether Benholm and Stone of Benholm .
history
In 1475 John Lundie had Benholm Castle, which was later expanded into a mansion , built as a Tower House . In the past, Benholm was a prosperous, agricultural town. With the decreasing economic importance of agriculture, the farms were gradually closed. While the forge closed in the 1950s, the school stayed open until 1968. In 1972 the parish hall, demolished in 1992, was sold. The post office closed in 1988 and the listed Benholm Parish Church in 2004. Two years later, Benholm was protected in its entirety as a Conservation Area .
Mills had been in operation in Benholm since the 12th century. The Mill of Benholm , now a museum, is the last remaining watermill in traditional Kincardineshire . The book Sunset Song (German: Das Lied vom Abendrot ) by the regional writer Lewis Grassic Gibbon was first implemented in a television series by the BBC in 1971 . The scenes at Long Robs Mill were filmed at the Mill of Benholm.
