Barry Stuart Sternlicht (born November 30, 1959 in New York City ) is an American entrepreneur.

He is the founder, president and CEO of Starwood Capital Group, a mutual fund with $ 51 billion in assets under management. He is also President of Starwood Property Trust, the largest real estate investment company in the United States. Sternlicht is the President of Starwood Waypoint Homes. From September 1997 to May 2005 he was Chairman of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide and from January 1999 to October 2004 CEO of Starwood Hotels.

Career

Sternlicht received a BA, magna cum laude, with honors from Brown University . He later earned an MBA with Honors from Harvard Business School . Barry Sternlicht is one of the two co-presidents of the company's board of directors. Sternlicht has been President and Chief Executive Officer of Starwood Capital Group since its inception in 1991. Starwood Capital's funds have invested in approximately 87,000 apartment / residential complexes, 2,600 hotels, 62 million square feet of office space, 50 million square feet of retail and 49,000 residential lots. The company currently manages $ 44 billion in assets on behalf of its wealthy and institutional partners. Starwood Capital employs 1,300 people, plus 17,400 people in externally managed public companies and portfolio operators. The company has offices in Greenwich (headquarters), Atlanta, San Francisco, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami, and offices in Hong Kong, London, Luxembourg, Paris and Frankfurt.

From September 1997 to May 2005 he was Chairman of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide and from January 1999 to October 2004 Chief Executive Officer of Starwood Hotels. From January 1995 to May 2005 he was also Chairman of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, a wholly owned subsidiary of Starwood Hotels, and from January 1995 to October 2004 Chief Executive Officer of that subsidiary. During his tenure, he built Starwood Hotels into one of the leading hospitality and leisure companies in the world, employing more than 120,000 people with 895 properties in 100 countries. Starwood Hotels is a fully integrated hotel owner, operator and franchisor. In 1994, Sternlicht's company, in partnership with Goldman Sachs, acquired Westin Hotels & Resorts in a $ 561 million transaction. Sternlicht founded W Hotels , a "boutique brand", and expanded the St. Regis Hotels brand from a single hotel to a global brand.

He has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer since Starwood Property Trust was founded in 2009. Sternlicht is the CEO of TRI Pointe Homes, Société du Louvre and Baccarat .

He is also a board member of Restoration Hardware, National Golf, The Estée Lauder Companies, the National Advisory Board of JPMorgan Chase and the Advisory Board of Eurohypo Bank. He is also a member of the board of the Robin Hood Foundation, the Dreamland Film & Performing Arts Center and the Executive Advisory Board of Americans for the Arts. He is a member of the US Olympic and Paralympic Foundation Trustee Council, the World Presidents Organization, and the Urban Land Institute.

He is a board member of the National Leadership Advocacy Program of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Kids in Crisis, the Harvard Club, the Business Committee for the Arts, and the Center for Christian-Jewish Understanding. He is a member of the Committee to Encourage Corporate Philanthropy, the Presidential Tourism & Travel Advisory Board, the Young Presidents Organization, the World Travel & Tourism Council and the Urban Land Institute. From 2000 to 2019, Sternlicht structured more than 300 investment transactions with assets of more than $ 40 billion. From 1993 to 2017, Sternlicht structured investments with an asset of approximately $ 68 billion. In total, that's more than $ 100 billion from 1990 to 2019.

In 2013, Sternlicht was named the most important person in commercial real estate finance by the Mortgage Observer. In 2010, Sternlicht was named Executive of the Year and Investor of the Year by Commercial Property Executive. Sternlicht was also named America's Best Lodging CEO by Institutional Investor magazine. He is a member of the Interior Design Magazine Hall of Fame. He received the Preston Robert Tisch Distinguished Industry Leadership Award from New York University , the CEO Diversity Award from Diversity Best Practices / Business Women's Network, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Travel Marketing Executives, the Hospitality Heritage Award from the American Hotel and Lodging Association and Brandweek's Marketer of the Year Award. Sternlicht's humanitarian efforts have been recognized with awards such as the JDRF Man of the Year, the JDRF Living and Giving Award, and the JDRF Chairman's Award.
