Bearded ax

Example of a bearded ax (mountain beard)

The bearded ax is a long-wielded ax with a heavy, single-edged blade ( blade ) which is extended (drawn out) towards the front towards the shaft or point.

Bearded axes were typically used as a melee weapon. However, some bearded axes were also used as long-range weapons by being hurled from a distance into the enemy ranks. The predecessor of the bearded ax was probably Franziska der Franken, who was similar in structure and use . Bearded axes include the bardiche , the Lochaber ax and the mountain beard . The name bearded ax is a collective name for all axes that belong to this construction principle. The blade shape of the bearded ax has been preserved in the carpenter's hatchet .
