The Barton's long-billed urchin ( Zaglossus bartoni ), also known as the eastern long-billed urchin, is one of the three long-billed urchins of the genus Zaglossus that are endemic to the island of New Guinea . This species is found mainly in Papua New Guinea at altitudes between 2000 and 3000 meters.
features
It differs from the other species of this genus by the number of claws on the front and rear paws; it has five claws on the front and four on the hind paws. The weight varies between 5 and 10 kg, the body length between 60 and 100 cm. The Barton long-billed hedgehog has no tail and has thick, black fur. This species is the largest of all monotons . In defense, it curls up into a spiky ball.
Subspecies
The following four subspecies have been recognized:
- Zaglossus bartoni bartoni in southeast New Guinea
- Zaglossus bartoni clunius on the Huon Peninsula
- Zaglossus bartoni diamondi in central New Guinea
- Zaglossus bartoni smeenki in eastern New Guinea
The population of each subspecies is geographically isolated. The individual subspecies differ mainly in their size in the adult stage.
Threat and Safeguards
The Barton's long-billed hedgehog is listed as critically endangered in the Red List of Endangered Species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature ( IUCN ).
As protection from international trade, the species is listed, like all species of the genus, in Appendix II of the Washington Convention for the Protection of Species, CITES . This measure is carried on at the European level by listing the species in Appendix B of the EU Species Protection Regulation (EC) No. 338/97 and EC Regulation 407/2009.
