Barwani was one of the princely states of the Central India Agency of British India . It was founded in the 11th century by Sisodia - Rajputs from Mewar / Udaipur. Around 1650 Barwani became the capital of the principality. After losing territory in the Marathas , Barwani became a British protectorate (until 1947). The last ruler Devi Singh (1930-1956) was elevated to Maharana . The country had an area of 3051 km² and 76,136 inhabitants (1901). Barwani was annexed to India on June 15, 1948 and joined the Madhya Bharat Princely Union on June 16 . On November 1, 1956, all princely states of the Union were dissolved and incorporated into the state of Madhya Pradesh .

Barwani had a state post with its own stamps from 1921 to 1948.
