The basalt tuff quarry is an extensive natural monument and geotope in the area of the Baden-Württemberg community of Beuren in the Esslingen district.
Characteristics
The natural monument was designated by ordinance of August 25, 1983 under the name of basalt tuff quarry (basalt pits) . It is also protected as a geotope under the name of basalt tuff quarry in the Gewann Herbstwiesen NE von Beuren .
Location and description
The natural monument is located around one kilometer northeast of Beuren near the Beuren open-air museum, directly on state road 1210 in the direction of Owen . The quarry is popularly referred to as a "sand pit" because the sand-like tuff stone has been used as a building material for centuries.
It is a chimney of the Miocene Swabian volcano in the Urach-Kirchheim volcanic area. The black tuff sands are partly lightly stratified and are criss-crossed by numerous small tuff passages.
Others
Due to its location on the slope, the former sand pit had the shape of an amphitheater and was a venue for various clubs in the 1970s.
