Basil Howard Moreton, 6th Earl of Ducie ( November 15, 1917 - November 12, 1991 ) was a British nobleman and politician who was the Earl of Ducie member of the House of Lords between 1952 and 1991 .

Life

Moreton was the son of Algernon Howard Moreton, the second and youngest son of Berkeley Moreton, 4th Earl of Ducie , and his wife Dorothy Edith Annie Bell. He grew up in Australia and attended the Anglican Church Grammar School in Brisbane . He did his military service as a staff sergeant with the 62nd Australian Infantry Battalion and the 2nd / 3rd Australian Infantry Battalion . During the Second World War he took part in combat missions in New Guinea .

After the death of his uncle Capel Henry Berkeley Reynolds Moreton, 5th Earl of Ducie , an older brother of his father, he inherited the title of 6th Earl of Ducie and the associated title of 6th Baron Moreton of Tortworth on June 17, 1952 , in the County of Gloucester, and as 9th Baron Ducie of Tortworth, in the County of Gloucester. This also made him a member of the House of Lords, which he belonged to until his death on November 12, 1991.

Moreton married Alison Bates on April 15, 1950. This marriage resulted in three sons and a daughter, including the eldest son David Leslie Moreton , who inherited the title of 7th Earl of Ducie and the subordinate titles after his death.
