The Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato is a church in the historic center of Genoa .

The church bears the additional name Vastato because it was built in an area outside the city walls in which the buildings located there were demolished ( devastated ) for defense reasons .

history

The construction of the church was started by the Franciscans around 1520 on a square where the little church of Santa Maria del Prato used to be . However, construction was stopped in 1537 and only continued in 1591 under the patronage of the Lomellini family and the management of Taddeo Carlone .

In the early 17th century, the richly decorated baroque decoration and especially the dome was completed by the painter Andrea Ansaldo. The current neoclassical facade was designed by Carlo Barabino in the years 1830-1840.

During the Second World War , the church was badly damaged by Allied bombing in 1942 and 1943 and restored in the post-war years.
