The Basilica of the Assumption ( Hungarian Nagyboldogasszony Bazilika ) is a Roman Catholic church in Gödöllő -Máriabesnyő, Hungary . The church in the diocese of Vác is consecrated under the patronage of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

Under the factory owner Count Antal Grassalkovich, the place experienced a great boom in the 18th century. Instead of an old chapel, he had a church built in Máriabesnyő from 1758. A statuette of the Virgin Mary is said to have been found. Another figure of Mary from the Italian pilgrimage site was acquired for the Loreto Chapel . The church was consecrated in 1761. In 1763 a Capuchin monastery was added, which was consecrated together with the elevation of the tower in 1771. The church was renovated in 1912 and became a parish church in 1936. In 1950 the Capuchins, like the Salvator Sisters who had settled in 1933, had to leave the facility, which was used by the agricultural college until 1989, among other places.

The pilgrimage church was founded in 2008 by Benedict XVI. raised to the rank of a minor basilica.

Building

The baroque church was built by Johannes Mayerhoffer and has a crypt (lower church) and a Loreto chapel . The oil paintings of the upper and lower church were painted by Norbert Baumgartner, a Viennese monk, around 1770. The windows of the upper church and the wall paintings of the church were designed by Lajos Márton. The gold-plated rococo confessionals probably date from the 18th century.

The founder of the church was buried in a marble sarcophagus created by Johann Georg Dorfmeister in the church. Irene Teleki, wife of the Hungarian Prime Minister Pál Teleki , who died in 1941 , was also buried near the church in the Capuchin Cemetery.

To the northwest of the church is the Mater Salvatoris retreat house and conference center .
