The church is the original cathedral of the Archdiocese of Hyderabad and consecrated to Our Lady under the invocation of the Assumption of God , it bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

St. Mary's Church on Sarojini Naidu Road is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the city of Secunderabad. The few Christians in the area were only occasionally cared for by missionaries since the 16th century. With the work of Father Daniel Murphy, who later became the first Vicar Apostolic of Hyderabad, among the Irish Catholics in the British Army, the building of the church began. Murphy arrived in India in 1839 and began building St. Mary's Church in 1840 as the cathedral for the Apostolic Vicariate of Hyderabad, which was created in 1851. Completed and blessed in 1850, it was the largest church in the Principality of Hyderabad at the time . In 1871 some sisters from St. Anne in Turin came here and opened a school known as St. Ann School. With the elevation of the Vicariate of Hyderabad-Deccan to the diocese in 1886, the seat was moved to Hyderabad and the church lost its function as a cathedral. In the 1960s she received the Patronage of the Assumption. Pope Benedict XVI elevated the church to the rank of minor basilica on November 7, 2008.

architecture

The church was built in the Indian style of neo-Gothic with its arches and narrow buttresses. The three-aisled basilica has several side altars dedicated to various saints. The church tower rises above the entrance. It shows a statue of the Virgin Mary above the entrance arch and has four bells that were brought from Italy in 1901.

Next to the church is St. Ann's Monastery, which runs St. Ann's High School.
