The Basilica of the Assumption and Archangel Michael ( Polish Bazylika Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny i św. Michała Archanioła ) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Trzemeszno in the Polish Voivodeship of Greater Poland . The core of the late Baroque church of the Gniezno Archdiocese dates from the 12th century. The former abbey church has had the title of a minor basilica since 1969 and was declared a historical monument in 1960.

history

A possible predecessor church from the 10th century could at Czech incursions by Břetislav I have been destroyed. The origins of today's church are believed to be in the 11th or 12th century, it was built as a Romanesque church. After various fires, the church was rebuilt at the end of the 16th century using the foundations and part of the walls of the previous building in the Gothic style. Under Abbot Michał Kosmowski, it was rebuilt and expanded again from 1764 to 1781 based on the model of the Church of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice . The now baroque monastery church was consecrated in 1791 after the construction work was completed. The monastery was closed and demolished in 1836 under Prussian rule.

During the Second World War, the church was robbed of all valuable objects by the German occupiers and used as a military camp. When leaving the city on January 21, 1945, Wehrmacht soldiers burned the church down. The church was rebuilt there in the 1950s and 1960s along with a thorough reconstruction of elements of the interior design.

On October 28, 1969, the parish church of Pope Paul VI. raised to the rank of a minor basilica.

Building

The three-aisled baroque building on the plan of a Latin cross was built in the style of a basilica  . It has a large crossing dome over a windowed drum and is surrounded by a chapel wreath . Fragments of the Romanesque and Gothic predecessor churches have been preserved, including the foundations and columns. The baroque furnishings include frescoes by Franciszek Smuglewicz.

Close to the basilica is the renovated former abbot's palace, which now houses the rectory .
