St. Anthony's Basilica

The Basilica of St. Anthony is a Roman Catholic church in Dornahalli in the southern Indian state of Karnataka . The sanctuary of the diocese of Mysore is dedicated to Anthony of Padua .

history

According to tradition, a farmer found a wooden statue of St. Anthony of Padua about 200 years ago while plowing his field in Dornahalli. The farmer built a small church in honor of the saint. A large church was built on the site in the mid-19th century and another in 1920.

When this church was in a dilapidated condition, it was demolished in 1969 and rebuilt. The double tower facade of the church from 1920 was renovated and retained. The three-aisled basilica has the floor plan of the Cross of St. Anthony with a dome over the raised chancel. The simple building with flat ceilings also houses a small relic of St. Anthony, which was brought from Italy.

Pope Francis granted the sanctuary the title of a minor basilica by resolution of October 17, 2019 . In 2020 the brick towers were renovated.
