Kaisha Atachanova

Kaischa Atachanowa ( Russian Кайша Атаханова ; born July 18, 1957 in Karaganda ) is a Soviet - Kazakh biologist and environmental activist .

Life

Atachanowa's father was a miner and combatant . Her parents and sister died of cancer , and her only brother was also diagnosed with cancer. She was interested in nature and animals from an early age, so she studied at the Faculty of Biology at Karaganda University .

After graduation, Atakhanova began to conduct ecological and biological studies. Because of her interest in the effects of radioactive waste in Kazakhstan , she specialized in the genetic effects of ionizing radiation on amphibians , especially frogs . She carried out investigations at the Semipalatinsk nuclear weapons test site so that she could study the effects of radiation on people and animals directly affected.

In 1992 Atachanova founded the Karaganda Ecology Center in order to be able to adequately inform people who were exposed to radiation. She led a successful campaign against the importation of radioactive waste into Kazakhstan. She is a founding member of the Women's Earth Alliance (WEA) to protect the earth .
