The church belonging to the Archdiocese of Caracas is dedicated to the Apostle Peter and has the title of a minor basilica . It was built in the 1950s as a scaled-down copy of St. Peter's Basilica .

history

The parish of San Pedro Apostel was founded on March 25, 1952 and initially used various chapels. The church was built on the site of the Valle Abajo monastery according to plans by the Italian architect Marco Redimi. The foundation stone was laid in 1953. On December 25, 1954, Bishop Rafael Arias Blanco celebrated the first mass in the crypt and consecrated the church on June 29, 1959 as the current archbishop. In 1962 Pope John XXIII raised the church to the rank of minor basilica.

architecture

The church was designed in the historicizing style as a copy of St. Peter's Basilica, but built with the current building materials brick and reinforced concrete. The crossing dome with a lantern rises above a drum on the floor plan of a cross . At the portico of the facade there are three sculptures by the artist Ronaldo depicting the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and the Apostle Peter.

The altars of the temple date back to 1701 and were brought here from the Convent of the Visitation of Santa Maria de las Salesas of Sanremo, Italy. The Way of the Cross is the work of the Brazilian artist Carlos Oswald. The Hungarian sculptor G. Haynald made a portrait of St. Pius X. , the glass windows come from Hendrik Coppejans' workshop; and a bronze Christ was created by Mario Campanella.
