The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Benedict des Mohren ( Spanish Nuestra Señora del Rosario y San Benito de Palermo ) is a Roman Catholic parish church in the departmental capital Paysandú , Uruguay . The church belonging to the diocese of Salto is consecrated to the Blessed Mother Mary under the invocation of Our Lady of the Rosary and Benedict the Moor . The listed church has the rank of a minor basilica .

history

In 1786 there is said to have been the first chapel on site, the parish was founded in 1805. In 1815 there was a simple thatched church with a bell tower. The foundation stone for today's church was laid in 1860. The building in the neo-renaissance style was carried out by the builders Bernardo and Francisco Poncini. But already during the siege of Paysandú in the Uruguayan War in 1864 the church was badly damaged. The reconstruction was consecrated in 1873 and completed by 1879.

Furnishing

The new altar was destroyed by fire in 1882 and replaced in 1884. The wall and ceiling decorations with frescoes by Antonio Buscaglia were completed in 1900. In 1906 the mosaic floor was laid and a Walcker organ from Germany was installed. The organ with two manuals and 23 registers was restored in 1997. The oldest church bell bears the inscription Sante Nicolae, Ora Pro Nobis ano 1689 , and six new bells were procured from Italy in 1909.

Appreciation

In 1949 Pope Pius XII raised the church was the first in Uruguay to be granted the rank of minor basilica . The structure was declared a National Historic Monument (Monumento Histórico Nacional) in 1997 . The interior of the church is in great need of restoration due to the climatic conditions.
