Basilica of Our Lady of Yagma

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Basilica of Our Lady of Yagma is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage church on the northwestern outskirts of Ouagadougou , the capital of Burkina Faso . The minor basilica is dedicated to Our Lady and belongs to the Archdiocese of Ouagadougou .

Place of pilgrimage

The shrine of Yagma is a Marian pilgrimage site which, unlike the great Marian shrines, does not go back to an apparition of Mary. In 1966, the then Archbishop of Ouagadougou, Cardinal Paul Cardinal Zoungrana , urged Christians who wanted a place to worship Mary : "Find the place you like, prepare it and then we will come to build a church." A year later the hill of Yagma was chosen to house the Marian Shrine. In November 1967 the construction of the Marian grotto began and on March 31, 1968 the first group of pilgrims was welcomed in Yagma. On February 5, 1971, Cardinal Zoungrana declared the site the destination of the diocesan pilgrimage. A podium was erected after the grotto, and in 1978 the foundation stone for today's church was laid. In 1988, Yagma was declared a national pilgrimage destination by the Bishops' Conference of Burkina Faso. Today every parish in Burkina Faso has its own day for the annual pilgrimage here.

Church building

On January 29, 1990, Pope John Paul II celebrated the Eucharist in Yagma in front of more than 600,000 people and blessed a picture of the Virgin of Lourdes , thereby initiating the actual start of construction in 1991. The construction work was very slow, mainly due to lack of funding. The church was built in the shape of a basilica with a transept and space for 2200 worshipers. The church was consecrated on February 9, 2013 and already on March 20 of the same year by Pope Francis raised to a minor basilica .
