Basketball in Canada isa popular sportin Canada due to its proximity to the United States , but it falls far behind the national sport of ice hockey .
Basketball teams and leagues
There are few professional basketball teams in Canada. The only team in the NBA are the Toronto Raptors . Since 2011, the National Basketball League of Canada has again been a professional league with nine participants from eastern Canada.
Basketball is widespread as a university sport. In the basketball leagues of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport , 43 universities take part in 4 conferences in the competition for the WP McGee Trophy , with the teams from the capital Ottawa dominating in recent years. A similar league for colleges exists within the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association .
Former basketball leagues and teams
From 1988 to 1992, Canadian basketball teams played in the American World Basketball League (WBL). Then there was the NBL - National Basketball League in Canada from 1992 to 1994 .
