The Basler Afrika Bibliographien ( BAB ) are a documentation and competence center in the Swiss city of Basel . The BAB are dedicated to Namibia and other parts of southern Africa and are an archive , specialist library and publisher in one.
They were founded in 1971 by Carl Schlettwein (1925–2005), who “lived for a long time in the 1950s and 1960s in what was then South West Africa (now Namibia)” and systematically collected literature on this country.
The general library includes written publications with collections of published rarities (“with books on Africa since the 16th century”), posters, maps and city maps, as well as films. The publisher publishes humanities literature on Namibia and southern Africa. The archive and the documentation center contain unpublished documents, photographs, postcards, sound and film material. The institution also offers "scientific, cultural and socio-political events".
