Bassem Hawar

Bassem Hawar (* 1972 in Baghdad ) is a German-Iraqi violinist who mainly plays the Iraqi knee violin Djoze .

Act

From 1993 Hawar studied classical Arabic and Iraqi music at the Conservatory in Baghdad, majoring in the four-string djoze up to the end of the diploma. He then studied musicology at Baghdad University. He has also given concerts in the Middle East and Europe with the Iraqi Symphony Orchestra and the Melodic, al-Bayariq, and Babel groups . From 1995 to 1999 he taught the Djoze at the Baghdad Conservatory, which he also developed.

Hawar has lived in Germany since 2000 and is a co-founder of the ensembles Lagash and Sidare , with whom he has given concerts in numerous European and some Asian countries. This was followed by appearances with the Yuri Honing Trio, with whom he also released the album Orient Express in 2002 , and the Baghdad Ensemble ( Music from Mesopotamia , 2005). With Saad Thamir, Dietmar Fuhr and the Belgian pianist Fré Desmyter he formed the Ahoar ensemble , which released the album Between Rivers in 2007. He also worked with Maria Jonas and Dominik Schneider in the Ensemble Sanstierce and with Albrecht Maurer in Crossover Baghdad Cologne . In 2018 he founded his Nouruz ensemble . He can also be heard on albums by Dietmar Bonnen and Tim O'Dwyer ( The Ford ).

Prizes and awards

In 2006 the Ahoar group won 1st prize at the Creole NRW state competition ; the following year she won the national Creole - Global Music Contest . In 2020 Hawar was awarded the WDR Jazz Prize in the world music category ("Sound Worlds").
