Basslink ( English Basslink HVDC Interconnector ) is a high-voltage direct current transmission line (HVDC) through the Bass Strait between southeast Australia and Tasmania .

The 374.7 km long line is the first and so far the only submarine cable route between the two territories. 290 km are designed as submarine cables. The line runs from the north from the converter station in the Australian state of Victoria next to the Loy Yang power station near the city of Traralgon through Bass Strait and ends in Tasmania in the city of George Town . In addition to transmitting electrical energy, the high-voltage cable with additional fiber-optic cables is also used for data transmission.

power

The line was built between 2003 and 2005. When it opened, it was the longest submarine cable for electrical energy transmission and was exceeded by the NorNed , which opened in 2008 . The Basslink was officially put into operation on April 29, 2006. The continuous output, which can be transmitted either from Tasmania to Australia or from Australia to Tasmania, is 500  MW . For a short time, for a few hours and when outside temperatures are low, the output can be increased to a maximum of 630 MW. The line connects the power grid operated in Tasmania with 220 kV three-phase current with the Australian power grid, which is operated with 500 kV. The system is technically designed as a monopolar HVDC for a direct voltage of 400  kV and uses the earthing as a return conductor. The manufacturer of the converter stations is Siemens AG .

history

The data connection via Basslink was put into operation in 2009 and is used for Internet connections and the data connection of Tasmania.

On December 21, 2015 it was announced that Basslink would be temporarily suspended for repairs. A faulty point in the line was discovered around 100 km off the coast. At that time, March 16, 2016 was given as the date for the restart. The first repair sections were completed in April 2016. Completion is now expected for June 2016. The interruption of the power line between mainland Australia and Tasmania exacerbates the Tasmanian energy crisis that has existed for years . Tasmania gets its electricity mainly from hydropower and storage power plants, although surpluses have so far been exported to mainland Australia. When the water levels in Tasmania were low, electricity was drawn from Australia. Due to the line interruption, the water levels in Tasmanian reservoirs are falling unchecked.
