The Halberstadt Bastion is a former bastion of the Magdeburg Fortress in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt . The preserved remains of the bastion are under monument protection .

location

It is located on the northwest side of Erzbergerstrasse in the northern part of Magdeburg's old town .

Architecture and history

The bastion was built between 1680 and 1713 and represents the last remnant of the oldest fortress belt of the Prussian fortress Magdeburg, from the period up to 1713. In around 1850 casemates were built into the bastion . They consist of bricks and rubble stones and are covered with an earth cover. Today (as of 2017) the earth cover is overgrown with trees.

The name Halberstadt refers to the Principality of Halberstadt, which became part of the Mark Brandenburg in 1648 . The bastions of the Magdeburg Fortress were named after Brandenburg's acquisitions in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was named in the period up to 1712.

The bastion was part of the north-western front of the fortress and belonged to the inner ring. On the field side, the Halberstadt counterguard and the Heinrich bastion were in front of it. In the inner ring, the Magdeburg bastion was adjacent to the south and the Hessen bastion to the north .

In the local register of monuments , the bastion is recorded as a monument under registration number 094 17408 .
