location

It is located on the east side of Hohepfortestrasse in the southern part of Magdeburg's Alte Neustadt district . The site of the bastion is now part of the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg . The remaining remains are located underground, below a green area and the street, immediately west of the university sports hall 3. This is also where the access to the preserved facility is located.

Architecture and history

The Hessen bastion detached was built between 1717 and 1740 and belonged to the outer part of the northern front of the fortress belt. On the city side, it was upstream of the Mark Kontergarde . To the west it was flanked by the Ravelin Sweden , to the east by the fountain . On the field side in front of her, until the demolition of the old new town, lay the buildings of this town, with its wide path, town hall and the then Sankt-Nicolai-Kirche.

The bastion should not be confused with the former Hessen bastion further west . The addition detached refers to the function as an advanced work. The name Hessen referred to friendly relations between the Mark Brandenburg at the beginning of the 18th century.

The vaults on the left face of the bastion have been preserved. The casemates were probably built in the 1860s.

In the local register of monuments , the bastion is listed as a monument under registration number 094 18233 .

Based on the distance to the Mark barracks, the depth of the original graduation of the fortress can still be seen today.
