Fritters in the Café du Monde

The du Monde Café is a cafe with its own bakery in New Orleans . Its main store has been on Decatur Street on the edge of the historic French Quarter since 1862 . It is famous for its fritters and chicory coffee and is considered a tourist attraction. The Café du Monde is open 24/7, except on the Christmas holidays and during a hurricane .

history

The Café du Monde opened as a small street café in 1862. Since then it has been in the same place without interruption. It has been known for its Coffee and Chicory - white coffee from coffee beans and roasted chicory roots , a specialty of the southern states , and its homemade beignets , a French -fried pastry that with powdered sugar is served and is an integral part of the cuisine of New Orleans. For more than a hundred years, the offer of the Café du Monde consisted exclusively of these two specialties. Iced coffee and soft drinks have only been on offer since 1988 . In 1942, Hubert Fernandez bought the café, which has been owned by his family ever since.

Hurricane Katrina

When Hurricane Katrina reached New Orleans around midnight on August 27, 2005 , the Café du Monde also had to close. Due to its elevated position compared to other parts of the city, it suffered little damage. After the hurricane, the café was closed for renovation work for six weeks. Its reopening on October 19, 2005 was a national news topic as a symbol of the economic and social revitalization of the destroyed city.

Café du Monde as a brand

The World's Fair , which took place in New Orleans in 1984, helped make the Café du Monde internationally known. During the 1980s, the Café du Monde developed into an international franchise . A partner company opened more than 50 branches in Japan in the style of the original café in the French Quarter, offering a similar range of coffee and fritters.

In the New Orleans metropolitan area, the Café du Monde now has eight branches (as of 2017), including in the suburbs Metairie and Kenner and in Mandeville and Covington north of Lake Pontchartrain . Café du Monde sells its own coffee, beignets and a wide range of merchandise items in several gift shops in New Orleans and through an online shop .
