action

The four magicians J. Daniel Atlas, Henley Reeves, Jack Wilder and Merritt McKinney are brought together by an unknown patron, around a year later in Las Vegas as "The four horsemen" (in the English language original: The four horsemen ) based on the four to perform apocalyptic horsemen . Her show is financed by the insurance magnate Arthur Tressler. At the end of their performance, the riders invite a spectator from the audience to help them with their final trick: a real bank robbery. Equipped with a transmission camera, the man is apparently teleported to his bank in Paris , where he activates a suction system that sucks in the money and lets it rain on the audience in Las Vegas.

FBI investigator Dylan Rhodes is assigned to the case and is assigned the Interpol agent Alma Dray as a partner. They interrogate the wizards, but have to release them again, as no other explanation than magic can be found for the theft. Rhodes then meets Thaddeus Bradley, a former magician who hosts a television show in which he exposes other wizards' tricks. Bradley was also in the audience and concludes that the four riders had stolen the money beforehand and led the audience to believe that the robbery was happening in real time .

Rhodes, Dray and Bradley are spectators at the next show of the four riders in New Orleans . The final of the presentation is that the four horsemen of about 140 million US dollars distributed by Tress moth account to the accounts of the spectators. The magicians reveal to the audience that it consists entirely of Tressler's insurance customers whose claims were fraudulently rejected or reduced by the insurance company after Hurricane Katrina . Rhodes tries to arrest the four horsemen, but is brought to the ground by hypnotized bystanders who attack anyone who says the words "Don't move." The angry Tressler hires Bradley to expose and humiliate the four riders at their next performance. Later, while researching the background of the four riders, Dray comes across rumors about a secret society of magicians called "The Eye". She tells the skeptical Rhodes of her suspicion that all incidents have to do with Lionel Shrike. Shrike was a magician who had once been exposed by Bradley. After this humiliation, Shrike tried to restore his reputation by performing a dangerous feat in which he tried to free himself from a locked safe thrown in the water. However, he did not appear again, the safe and the body were never found.

Before the last performance of the four riders in New York City , Rhodes and Dray find the group's hiding place. Atlas, Reeves, and McKinney escape. Rhodes only meets Wilder and engages him in a scuffle, in which Wilder can escape. He escapes in a stolen car, but apparently has a fatal accident in the subsequent chase. Rhodes still manages to save documents from the vehicle before it explodes. Rhodes and Dray learn that the four riders are after a safe filled with several million US dollars, which is located in the hall of a valuables company. The truck that is supposed to take the safe away is stopped by the FBI, but does not contain the expected millions, but rubber toys. The ability of the four horsemen to take the FBI by surprise over and over again leads Rhodes and Dray to believe that there is a “fifth horseman”, an insider.

During the final appearance, the investigators try again to grab the remaining three magicians, but they jump off a roof and escape. Banknotes rain down on the enthusiastic crowd, which, however, turn out to be counterfeit money printed with the likeness of the four riders. Rhodes and Dray are left with the unsolved case.

Bradley returns to his car and discovers that it has been filled with real money from the stolen safe. He is arrested and visited by Rhodes in prison. Bradley claims he was set up and explains how the group used a mirror trick to steal the safe. By sharing this information, he hopes to be offered a deal , only to then realize that Rhodes is the fifth horseman and the genius behind the plan. However, Bradley is left in the cell by Rhodes asking "why". Rhodes finally meets with the four horsemen, including Wilder, whose vehicle was secretly exchanged during the chase and his accidental death was thus only faked. They are amazed that Rhodes is the stranger who brought them together a year earlier. This finally takes them into the society "Das Auge".

Rhodes later visits Dray in Paris and reveals to her that he is the son of Lionel Shrike, the magician who drowned years ago in the underwater trick. Over the years he developed the concept of the four horsemen to get revenge on everyone involved in his father's death: Bradley, who publicly humiliated his father, the Paris bank and Tressler Insurance, who refused to take out life insurance the father's payoff, and the company that made the safe used in the trick. Due to the poor quality of the steel, the safe had bent underwater and made escape impossible. Rhodes, then a little boy, lived in poverty until the "Eye" society took care of him. Dray decides not to arrest him, and together they look out over the Seine .

In a final scene during the credits (only in the Extended Cut), the four riders are shown driving a vehicle to a lonely place in the desert where - similar to a small town - discarded oversized advertising signs, neon signs and backdrops in one way Cemetery for these things were gathered. McKinney seems to have driven her there. You go into an old factory hall in which a large number of boxes of different sizes are set up. The boxes all bear the symbol of the "eye" and have a lock. Reeves suspects that it is the rider's new equipment and asks McKinney for the card with the symbol of the "eye". He grins and says "All right".

Reviews

"Isla Fisher gives everything as an escape artist and Jesse Eisenberg as a magician and Mark Ruffalo and Mélanie Laurent also shine."

- Meeting point cinema

“Director Leterrier (' Clash of the Titans ') has a knack for speed and spectacle and not much interest in heart and mind. No problem if the main characters remain stencils without attributes or if the big revelations at the end don't even make a bit of sense on closer inspection - the main thing is that it glitters. Which doesn't have to be bad. 'The Unbelievable' was one of the big surprise hits of the season in the USA, a lot of people obviously felt entertained. "

- Daniel Sander : Spiegel Online

"Even if the whole number of Die Inverfassbaren ultimately turns out (in the narrative sense) to be a cheap sleight of hand, the cinema viewer usually has fun - as long as the illusion of a coherent narrative can be maintained."

- Thomas Zimmer : Serienjunkies.de

“The most ingenious and most beautiful panel of the year! As with a Russian matryoshka, director Louis Leterrier stripped one figure after the other in his big show. If a riddle is solved, two new ones suddenly appear. "

- Michael Denks : Kreisbote

continuation

On July 3, 2013, Jon Feltheimer, chief executive officer of film distribution company Lionsgate, announced that there would be a sequel. Work on the film production began in 2014. With the exception of Isla Fisher, who decided not to take part due to her pregnancy , all of the main cast members can be seen again in The Incredible 2 . Then there was Daniel Radcliffe , who played Arthur Tressler's son. The director took Jon M. Chu .

The cinema premiere in the USA was on June 10, 2016. In Germany, the film opened on August 25, 2016.

Due to the success of the first two films, a third part was announced in 2016. As a result, Jon M. Chu will direct again, and Neil Widener and Gavin James will write the script. Nothing is known about the cast.

Trivia

Isla Fisher almost died while filming. She was lowered into a tank and was supposed to free herself from handcuffs, which she initially failed. She knocked on the window to alert the film crew. Since the script called for exactly this behavior, no one noticed her plight at first. Finally she was able to free herself.
