Breeding history
The Boers of the former Orange Free State paid the Basotho they preferred to employ with mares, horned cattle and sheep. In addition to the animals thus obtained, which were brought to Basutoland by the Basotho , there were large herds of mares that were brought to Basutoland from the Orange Free State and the Cape Colony in exchange for oxen. The animals that came together in this way formed the basis for the Basuto, which was kept all year round on the high plateaus of the Maluti and Drakensberg mountains , which contributed significantly to the hardness of the breed. The short vegetation period is probably responsible for the fact that the larger original races consolidated into the small Basuto.
Their distribution is limited to Lesotho , South Africa and Namibia .
