The Bathygadinae are a group of fish from the order of the cod-like (Gadiformes). The fish live worldwide at depths of 200 to 2700 meters, mostly between 400 and 1500 meters, in tropical and subtropical seas, but not in regions above the continental shelf in the eastern Pacific.

features

Bathygadinae are 25 to 63.5 cm long. They have two dorsal fins, the first short and the second long. The second dorsal fin begins just behind the first. Their fin rays are longer than those of the anal fin. The first dorsal fin has a slender, prickly second fin ray. The mouth is wide, terminal and slightly protractile (can be pushed forward). The muzzle is rounded. Both jaws are covered with small to tiny teeth. The goatee is long, short or may be absent. The number of Branchiostegal rays is seven. The gill-trap rays of the first gill arch are slender, long and numerous. The intestine is simply folded in an N or S shape.

The stomach contents of the Bathygadinae mostly consist of copepods , krill and shrimp, so that it is assumed that, in contrast to other grenadier fish , they mainly feed on pelagic prey.

Systematics

The Bathygadinae are usually assigned as a subfamily to the grenadier fish (Macrouridae) in the suborder Macrouroidei . In 2009 they were raised to family rank by Adela Roa-Varón and Guillermo Ortí as a sister group of the Macrouridae.

Of the Bathygadinae, only the North Atlantic species Bathygadus macrops occurs in such large numbers that it is of economic interest and is fished. In addition, B. melanobranchus, which lives deeper in the same region, is also caught to a small extent.
