Battery ancestor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ahne battery was a fortress to protect the jade estuary on the Oberahn fields off Eckwarden . It belongs to the ski jumps at Blexen , wholesale Fedderwarder where Waddenser pump and at high dignitaries of the five "French trenches" Butjadingen .

construction

The Ahne battery had a rectangular structure and was surrounded on all sides by ramparts. Between 1812 and 1813, the battery was extended on the southeast side with a wedge-shaped wall. There were four buildings here. Three smaller buildings, presumably food and powder stores, were laid out within the northern wall, with a log house in the center . Similar to the Blexer battery, the block house of the Ahne battery was expanded with additions in a second expansion phase.

Armament

In 1812 the battery had 12 cannons. The battery's cannons faced north, west, and south. There were no cannons to the east.

history

Napoleon considered building a war port at Eckwarden in order to take advantage of the favorable location of the Jade Bay. The purpose of the Grand Duchy battery, like the one on the Oberahn fields, was to protect this future port. The construction work for the Ahne battery began at the same time as that of the Battery Grand Dignitaries in autumn 1810. The work was carried out by the local population without payment. The Brigadier General de Sailly demanded on November 17, 1810 materials and workers in Oldenburg . Construction work was significantly at the expense of the local population. This was not only obliged to work, but also suffered from billeting.
