- FCI: International Working Championships (CIT) - special provisions for earth dogs. Valid from January 1st, 2011.

In group 3 the FCI leads the terriers , in group 4 the dachshunds .

Earth dogs according to FCI regulations as of January 1st, 2011 are:

FCI standard FCI group race
010 3 Border terrier
012 3 Fox terrier (smooth)
078 3 Welsh Terrier
103 3 German hunting terrier
148 4th Dachshund (dachshund, dachshund)
169 3 Fox terrier (wire)
339 3 Parson Russell Terrier
345 3 Jack Russell Terrier

Use in construction hunts

Earth dogs try to get the fox or badger to leave the burrow by barking and making light attacks. Dogs that are too aggressive are easily injured, especially when attacking the badger.

The badger can only be moved to leave the burrow in rare cases. It will then often be necessary to knock in (that is, dig a hole for the construction dog) to kill the badger. In order to always plan the impact so that it gets on the dog , a transmitter is attached to the construction dog . A tracking device can then be used to determine exactly where the dog is.

Today more and more artificial structures are being created for the fox to make the work of the construction dog easier.
