The Baumgarteninsel is a small island in Berlin-Köpenick north of the old town of Köpenick and near the place of April 23rd .
history
The area was first mentioned in 1776 as Kietzer Wiesen. In the 19th century, the meadows served the Köpenick washerwomen as a bleaching and drying place. The Spree (today Alte Spree) flowed north of the meadows around the site. To the south there was only a small ditch that a cat could jump over, the cat ditch, which had been dug to drain the meadows. At the end of the 19th century, the Katzengraben was expanded as part of a river straightening of the Müggelspree to a width and depth necessary for shipping, so that the area became an island. She was later filled up , and allotments were created. The Baumgarteninsel allotment garden of the Gartenfreunde Köpenick association has been on the island since 1922 . In 1970, during the GDR era , the colony was connected to the electricity network and in 1980 to the water network.
description
Baumgarteninsel can only be reached by boat. On the island, a pillar of the Katzengrabensteg was erected between the north and south banks of the Spree in 2001 , but due to the protests of the residents, an access to the island was not implemented (see photo in the info box).
A silver willow in the south-eastern part of the island is a natural monument .
