Soil consolidation

The soil stabilizer mixes binding agents into the soil.

The ground-reinforcement (obsolete also soil stabilization called) is a method for increasing the bearing capacity of a soil ( soil improvement ). For this purpose, binders ( e.g. cement or building lime or lime-cement mixtures (mixed binders)) are added to the soil, which change the composition of the soil structure down to a depth of 50 cm. This method is used for floors that are to be used as the basis for a traffic route or a building and which cannot withstand the resulting stresses. Non- cohesive soils of different composition ( e.g. gravel or sand mixtures ) as well as silty and clayey soils are suitable . Pronounced plastic clays (TA) with a semi-solid to solid consistency cannot be sufficiently homogenized with binders. Organic soils and incompletely decomposed rocks are unsuitable. As an alternative to soil consolidation, soil can be replaced.

Methods

A distinction must be made between the following two methods:

  • In Baumischverfahren (also mixed-in-place) the soil consolidation of special machines should be made locally with the help of (so-called soil stabilizers).
  • In the central mixing process (also mixed-in-plant), the soil is removed and transported to a mixing plant - often a mobile cold mixing plant . There it is mixed with water and binding agent. The prepared soil is then reinstalled on the construction site.
