The tree climbers (Dendrocolaptinae) are a subfamily within the pottery birds in the order of the passerine birds (Passeriformes).
distribution
They are widespread in the subtropical and tropical forest areas in Central and South America (from Mexico to Argentina ) and live mainly as solitary animals. Sometimes they form larger groups.
features
The shape of the beak varies from species to species. It can be long and curved downward, as in the sickle tree chopper, or short and straight, as in the redtail climber. They have sharp claws and strong legs and feet. Males and females are similar in their brown plumage. The wings and tail feathers are often rust-brown in color. With the help of their sharp claws and the stiff tail feathers that they use as a support, they can walk along the trees well. They feed on insects that they find in the folds of tree bark. They build their nests in tree hollows or abandoned woodpecker holes.
