The former Rädler cotton spinning mill on Schörgenhubstraße in the Kleinmünchen district of Linz was founded in 1830 and operated until 1985. Afterwards, a parish center and condominiums were set up in the building.

history

In 1830, the Rädler brothers set up a cotton spinning factory, the first major mechanical enterprise in Linz. The many old mills with their water rights along the Traun and large, undeveloped areas offered the necessary conditions. The first machines sometimes had to be operated by hand, but were soon replaced by English-style machines. The first machines used by Rädler were probably so-called “Mule Jennies” or “Spinning Mules”, universal spinning machines that could produce all types of yarn. They required great skill from the spinner, as hundreds of threads could tear if handled improperly. Semi-automatic spinning machines, the so-called semi-self-actuators, came into use around 1850, and around 20 years later the factory was converted to fully automatic spinning machines (self-actuators).

In 1907/1908 the factory building, which is now a listed building, was built. When cotton could no longer be imported after the outbreak of the First World War , the Rädler cotton spinning mill switched to producing paper yarn. The new beginning and upswing after the war did not last long. After the Great Depression , the company had to file for bankruptcy in 1931.

The new owner Himmelreich & Zwicker operated the spinning mill under the name Linzer Tuchfabrik from 1934 to 1985. Demolition of the factory building was prevented after citizen protests and thanks to political efforts by the city of Linz and the province of Upper Austria.

use

The Auwiesen parish center has been housed in the building since 1998 . The bells are outside the building next to the chimney. Furthermore, there are 22 condominiums and a business premises in the former "wheel factory".
