The Baurusuchidae are an extinct family group of the Mesoeucrocodylia , land-dwelling relatives of the crocodiles, and were native to South America and the Indian subcontinent from the Upper Cretaceous to the Eocene .
Initial description and definition
The taxon of the Baurusuchidae were scientifically described by Llewellyn Ivor Price in 1945 . He established and defined the taxon based on the type species Baurusuchus pachecoi . These Crocodylomorpha have an elongated skull that is compressed laterally. The square bones are vertical and the secondary palatine bone is of the Mesoeucrocodylia type . The dentition is differentiated with a tendency towards extreme reduction of the ziphodontic teeth (long, laterally compressed, bent back and serrated edges), especially in the upper jaw. The ectopterygoids are large and share the edges of the inner nostrils.
distribution
Fossil finds of these hypercarnivorous land-dwelling crocodylomorpha come from South America ( Argentina and Brazil ) and the Indian subcontinent ( Pakistan ).
Systematics
The Baurusuchidae form a group within the suborder of the Notosuchia . By definition, this group includes the common ancestors of Baurusuchus and Stratiotosuchus and all their descendants. The following genera are counted among the Baurusuchids:
- † Pabwehshi Wilson , Malkani & Gingerich , 2001 - Maastrichtium - Pakistan
- † Cynodontosuchus Woodward , 1896 - Coniacium to Santonium - Argentina
- † Gondwanasuchus Marinho , Iori , Carvalho & Vasconcelos , 2013
- † Pissarrachampsinae Montefeltro , Larsson , & Langer , 2011
- † Campinasuchus Carvalho et al., 2011
- † Pissarrachampsa Montefeltro , Larsson , & Langer , 2011
- † Wargosuchus Martinelli & Pais , 2008 - Santonium - Argentina
- † Baurusuchinae Montefeltro , Larsson , & Langer , 2011
- † Aplestosuchus Godoy , Montefeltro , Norell & Langer , 2014
- † Baurusuchus Price , 1945 - Turonium to Santonium - Brazil ( Adamantina Formation )
- † Stratiotosuchus Campos , Suárez , Riff & Kellner , 2001 - Turonium to Santonium - Brazil (Adamantina formation)
- † Bergisuchus Berg , 1966 - Eocene - Brazil
Bergisuchus stands outside the Baurusuchidae and is assigned to its own Bergisuchidae family .
