Alexander Wilhelm Armin Kellner (* 1961 in Vaduz , Liechtenstein ) is a Brazilian paleontologist . He is a renowned dinosaur researcher and has been director of the Brazilian National Museum in Rio de Janeiro since the beginning of 2018 .

Life

youth

Kellner was born in Liechtenstein in 1961 to an Austrian mother and a German father. A few years later his parents emigrated to Brazil and brought him, who had stayed with his grandfather in Austria, in 1965. His father traded in real estate and precious stones.

Training and activity at the National Museum

Kellner graduated from the German School in Rio de Janeiro , graduated from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro Geology (Master 1991) and received his doctorate from 1991 to 1996 at Columbia University in New York with an unpublished study of pterosaur (pterosaurs), entitled Description of New Material of Tapejaridae and Annexueridae (Pterosauria, Pterodactyloidea) and Discussion on Pterosaur Phylogen.

He has been a Brazilian citizen since 1997 and works at the Museu Nacional, initially as a lecturer and curator as well as head of the Department of Geology and Paleontology. In this role he was responsible for the sensational exhibition No Tempo dos Dinossauros in 1999 , with 220,000 visitors the most successful scientific special exhibition in Brazil. Subsequently, he was head of the postgraduate program in zoology. Kellner has been adjunct professor and head of the National Museum since 2018 - for a term of office until 2021 - which suffered massive damage from a major fire in early September of the same year .

Scientific reception

Kellner is the first to describe almost 60 vertebrate species , including 20 pterosaurs, and has published around 200 articles in scientific journals. He has been a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences since 1996 , as well as editor-in-chief of the Annals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences ( Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências ); He is also a research fellow at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) and the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences . In 2017, together with his Chinese colleague Xiaolin Wang , he discovered the largest collection of pterosaur eggs to date in northwest China's Turpan Depression , some with embryonic bones preserved in three dimensions.

Kellner is married and has two children.
