Baurusuchus is a genus of Mesoeucrocodylia (extinct crocodile relatives ) within the Baurusuchidae from the Upper Cretaceous of Brazil.
The generic name is derived from the southern Brazilian city of Bauru in the state of São Paulo and the Greek suchus ( Latinized ) or souchos ( crocodile ), with which the Greeks referred to the Egyptian crocodile god Sobek .
Fossil record
The fossil record of the genus in the sedimentary rocks of the Upper Cretaceous extends from the Turonian to the Santonian , i.e. from 93.5 to 83.5 million years ago. Fossils of the genus have so far only been found in the Adamantina Formation in the Paraná Basin .
description
Three species are assigned to the genus:
- † Baurusuchus pachecoi Price , 1945
- † Baurusuchus salgadoensis Carvalho , Campos & Nobre , 2005
- † Baurusuchus albertoi Nascimento & Zaher , 2010
Fossil remains that cannot be clearly assigned to a species are listed under Baurusuchus sp. cited.
Baurusuchus pachecoi : The snout (rostrum) is elongated, high and narrowed to the side. The square legs point downwards at right angles with a simultaneous slight incline backwards. There is a single terminal nostril. The pre-orbital window is absent. The eye sockets are oriented sideways. The laterotemporal window attached to the side of the temporal bone is separated from the eye socket by a thin, undecorated, only insignificantly flattened postorbital bone. The square leg is fixed, the supratemporal windows above the temporal bone are longer than they are wide and are almost the size of the eye socket. The nasal chambers extend forward to the single opening. The upper jaw is heavy and high with a distinct notch ( symphysis ).
Baurusuchus salgadoensis : Characterized by an existing pre-orbital window, paired external nostrils with an ossified septum, two well-fused supraorbital areas, the supratemporal window larger than the eye opening, and a square laterotemporal window. The positioning of the nostrils at the front end of the rostrum with simultaneous theropod-like lateral narrowing of the snout and teeth suggest that Baurusuchus salgadoensis was a carnivorous rural dweller. The lateral narrowing of the rostrum possibly led to an increase in the biting force with simultaneous protection of the skull area. With its pointed, conical, serrated (ziphodont) teeth, the animal pierced its prey and tore out whole pieces. The geological framework suggests that Baurusuchus salgadoensis lived in a hot, arid climate .
