The Bautzen Christmas Market (Budyske hodowne wiki) in Upper Lusatia , known today as Bautzener Wenzelsmarkt , in Upper Sorbian Budyske Wjacławske wiki , is the "oldest Christmas market in Germany named in a chronicle" according to the Record Institute for Germany (RID).

The tradition of the Bautzen Christmas market can be traced back to the year 1384 , when King Wenzel granted the city the right to hold a free meat market in the run-up to Christmas. The butchers were one of the most powerful guilds in Bautzen , their status even increased after the suppressed craftsmen revolts in 1400 and 1408 in Bautzen, in which they did not participate. In 1505 ordinances stipulated that no other place in Upper Lusatia was allowed to hold such a market. In the course of time more and more everyday products were added to the butchers' products and so a classic Christmas market developed.

Dealers and restaurateurs present their goods at the Christmas market. There are also cultural events such as the cutting of the several meters long tunnel , wind concerts and lieder singing.

The Wenzelsmarkt has had its current name since 2009, after 62 percent of the dealers represented there voted in favor of this name in a survey. In 2018, the Wenceslas Market was officially counted for its 635th edition. The Christmas market is held on the Kornmarkt am Reichenturm , Reichenstrasse and the main market.
