The Bavarian Prehistory Sheets are a traditional yearbook from the field of Bavarian prehistory and early history .

The Bavarian Prehistory Papers were founded in 1921/22 with double volume 1/2 of the popular science journal Bayerischer Prehistory Friend. The journal was started from a private side and should initially report on the prehistory and early history on Bavarian soil in a generally understandable manner, without being a scientific journal, which was still missing at that time. Since the tenth year (1931/32), the yearbook has been published by the Commission for Bavarian State History at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (now in conjunction with the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and the State Archaeological Collection ). Within a short time it developed into the leading scientific publication organ in its field. Nonetheless, lay people are still the target of the yearbook in addition to specialist scientists.

The chronicles of finds of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , which have been published within the yearbook to date, have been appearing as supplements to the yearbook since 1987 .

The periodical appeared regularly up to volume 15 (1938). With the outbreak of World War II , the method of publication became very irregular in the 1940s; only two volumes were published between 1939 and 1950. Volumes rarely appear in a double issue. Several volumes have been published as themed volumes for special occasions:

  • Volume 22 (1957): Friedrich Wagner on his 70th birthday
  • Volume 40 (1975): 90 Years of the Prehistoric State Collection, Museum of Prehistory and Early History
  • Volume 42 (1977): Complete table of contents of the years 1 / 2-9 of the Bavarian prehistory friend and the years 10-40 of the Bavarian prehistory sheets
  • Volume 65 (2000): Festschrift Kellner

The essays are supplemented by many black and white illustrations. The editorship lies with the Prehistoric State Collection. In addition to articles, reports on finds and smaller contributions, reviews are also published and a bibliography of relevant literature is kept. The yearbook is published by CHBeck- Verlag Munich.
