The Bavarian Telescope Meeting ( BTM ) has been an annual telescope meeting since 1997 for amateur astronomers and those interested in astronomy from Germany and neighboring countries. The meeting takes place on the Osterberg near Pfünz ( Upper Bavaria ) in the Eichstätt district in the municipality of Walting . It is an astronomical observation site in the Upper Bavarian Altmühltal Nature Park . The meeting serves to exchange experiences among experts as well as to promote astronomical knowledge in the population.

The BTM was founded by the amateur astronomer Ulrich Zehndbauer from Ingolstadt. Since 2014, astronomy friends Ingolstadt set as a public interest group committed to continue the tradition of the BTM and the opportunity to provide those interested to experience a dark starry sky under the guidance of experts.

At the meeting, instruments such as binoculars and large self-made mirror telescopes are available for sky observation in good weather. For laypeople, the Astronomy Friends Ingolstadt offer guided tours of the constellations, during which the most important and currently visible constellations in the sky are explained. During the day, instruments for solar observation with special white light and H-alpha filters are available, which enable observation of sunspots and prominences on the solar surface . In 2016, a walkable planet path was laid out for the time of the meeting , which shows the solar system and the distances between the planets true to scale over a length of 2.4 kilometers. The other program includes astronomical lectures and workshops as well as an award for special amateur astronomical achievements such as B. the best do -it-yourself project or best astrophotography , which is issued by a jury in the form of a certificate. In addition to a self-catering hut with lounges and sanitary facilities, a camping site with power supply and shopping facilities are available nearby.

The BTM is in a quiet location on the Osterberg, which is shielded from direct scattered light and light pollution , in the middle of the Altmühltal Nature Park . The unusually dark location is therefore particularly popular with astrophotographers and visual sky observers. Bright objects of our Milky Way , such as the Orion Nebula M42 or extragalactic objects such as the large Andromeda galaxy M31 or smaller Triangulum Galaxy M33 are (at Pfünzer starry sky with the naked eye visible visual limiting magnitude in Zenit close to about 6 likes ). Measurements of the sky quality with the SQM-L (Sky Quality Meter) resulted in 21.10 mag / arcsec². A special highlight and a very rare event for the southern German region during the Bavarian Telescope Meeting 2002 was a visually observable auroras on September 8, 2002 at around 0:44 a.m. (CEST). In order not to disturb the astronomical sky observations and recordings, strict light protection rules apply during the meeting on Osterberg . The use of all types of white light sources (e.g. vehicle lighting, flashlights, screens) is prohibited in order not to impair the observer's adaptation to darkness and the photographers' long exposure .
