History and description

The term comes from the English language and probably refers to bean (bean), a slang term for the head, comparable to pear in German .

While both sexes now dress with them, historically they were mostly worn by men, especially workers who had to avoid their hair slipping on their faces while working. Usually they had a small umbrella that was supposed to protect the eyes from the sun. They can therefore be seen as the forerunners of baseball caps . Propeller beanies were popular among children in North America in the mid- 20th century . The invention of the propeller beanie is attributed to the science fiction author Ray Nelson , who essentially bases his claim to immortality on:

"Centuries after all my writings have been forgotten, in some far corner of the galaxy, a beaniecopter will still be spinning."

"Centuries after all of my writings have been forgotten, a propeller beanie will still be rotating somewhere in the galaxy."

Today, beanies are particularly popular among children and young people and are mainly used as headgear in the skateboard and snowboard scene, and also partly in the hip-hop scene. Often times, the manufacturer's logo or a slogan is embroidered on the edge, which is usually turned over . Beanies with an integrated visor and extra long winter hats, the so-called long beanies, are currently in vogue .

In the youth scene, the beanie is usually worn over the ears and pulled deep into the forehead. Depending on the condition, it can be worn close to the head or with an insulating air space over the back of the head.

Beanies also gave their name to the Blue Beanie Day , which takes place annually on November 30th , a day of action to draw attention to the importance of web standards .
