Bearing Island (from English bearing ' bearing ' ) is a small island off the Danco coast of Graham Land in the north of the Antarctic Peninsula . In Wilhelmina Bay , it is located in the Paso Del Solar strait between Nansen Island and Enterprise Island .
In whalers the island as was Direction Iceland (English for alignment Island ) known since they related to a rock on the Nansen Island as a landmark for the entrance to Foyn Harbor served. Its current name, recognized by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee since 1960 and by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names since 1965, was given in the course of the British Imperial Antarctic Expedition (1920-1922) under the direction of John Lachlan Copes (1893-1947). In Argentina it is also known as Isla Bautismo (Spanish for baptismal island ).
