The Beartooth Mountains are located in southern Montana and northwestern Wyoming, USA and are part of the 900,000 acre (3800 km²) Absaroka-Beartooth-Wilderness . Granite Peak is the highest mountain and at 3,904 m at the same time the highest point in the state of Montana. The mountains are not far northeast of Yellowstone National Park and are part of the larger Yellowstone ecosystem . The Beartooth Highway ( US-212 ) runs through the mountains with the highest point on Beartooth Pass at 3345 m. The name of the mountain is attributed to an elevation in the relief of the mountain range, which looks like a bear tooth.
