location

The summit of Granite Peak is in the Custer National Forest , a National Forest under management of the United States Forest Service , about 15 kilometers north of the border with Wyoming and about 70 kilometers southwest of the city of Columbus . Ascent

The Granite Peak is considered to be one of the hardest to climb among the highest points of the 48 Continental United States . Due to difficult terrain with climbing passages and unmarked routes, an ascent is only recommended for experienced mountaineers , for which about two days should be planned. Snow can be expected in every season . Granite Peak was first climbed by Elers Koch in 1923 after attempts by some other mountaineers had failed. It was the last highest point in a state to be climbed.
