Beasty Bar is a card game by the Heidelberg geographer and game designer Stefan Kloß and the illustrator Alexander Jung . It is suitable for 2-4 players, ages 8+, and takes about 20 minutes per round. The game was published by Zoch Verlag in 2014 .

material

Beasty Bar consists of 52 large playing cards. Four playing cards show scenes. The remaining 48 animal playing cards are divided into the four colors yellow, red, green, blue with 12 cards each. The twelve cards have the values ​​from 1 to 12 and each show an animal with a special ability.

The four-language instructions (German, English, French, Italian) contain the most important information and are printed in bold. Examples are given for the moves. In addition, there is an overview map in each language with all animal actions.

Goal and course of the game

The aim of the game is to get past the doorman gorilla into the Beasty Bar with cunning, violence and trickery.

The players shuffle their 12 animal playing cards and put four of them in hand. The remaining eight playing cards are placed unseen as a draw pile. The “Heaven's Gate” and the “Discharge” card are placed in the middle of the table. In between there is space for five cards. This route is called the “jostling mile” in the game. The "Beasty Bar" card and the "That's it" card are placed next to them with a little space.

The player with what, according to the majority opinion, is the most animal-like clothing is allowed to start. The game is played clockwise. In your turn, you perform five actions in succession:

  1. play a card, i.e. place it face up at the end of the queue in the “jostling mile”;
  2. Implement animal action of the played card;
  3. if necessary: ​​let "constant" animal action take effect;
  4. if the queue already includes 5 animals: the first two victorious on "Heaven 'Gate", the last one on "That's it". Let the remaining two move up.
  5. Draw the card.

The game is over when all animal cards have been played. The winner is whoever has brought the most animals of their own color into the "Beasty Bar". If several players are tied, the winner is the one whose animals in the bar have the lowest total count. In rare cases there can be multiple winners.

variant

Game variant for advanced players: each player sorts out four animals of their own choice before starting the game and puts them aside face down. The different point values ​​on the back of the overview cards are essential for the selection. This makes the game much faster and more challenging. In the end, the winner is not the one with the most cards, but the one who has collected the most points.

extension

Two and a half years after it was published at the “Spiel” trade fair in 2014, Zoch Verlag also presented a box of the same size in April 2017 with the expansion that doubles the total number of cards: Beasty Bar: New Beasts in Town .

criticism

The game critic from spieletest.at only criticized the missing animal action pictogram on the monkey card . Otherwise there was great praise for the graphics , the interaction and the “replay appeal”. Since the game manages with so few rules, Beasty Bar is suitable both as a short “filler” and for evening party merriment. It works best with four, with three, but with two it is noticeably slow.

In 2015 , Beastie Bar took bronze medal at the à la carte card game award of the trade magazine Fairplay .
