Beata is a one- act operetta by Stanisław Moniuszko with a libretto by Jan Chęciński .

action

Since no sound recordings and current productions are known so far, and literature and the web for the operetta are very sparse (see reception), a synopsis is currently not possible.

music

Stanislaw Moniuszko called Beata an operetta. However, in many reviews it was later referred to as an opera. An article in the newspaper “Dziennik Warszawaski” explains: “We call Beata an opera and not an operetta, because we want to distinguish this wonderful, highly talented score from the mediocre works by Offenbach and Suppé . These are also one-act and humorous, but in no way can they be compared with Beata on an equal footing. "

libretto

Jan Chęciński conceived his libretto as an operetta in one act .

history

Emergence

The first mention of the development process can be read in the “Gazeta Warszawska”, (October 10, 1871, no. 223): “Moniuszko is currently working on a one-act opera entitled Beata [...] The fans of good music await the new work our maestros with impatience. "

The premiere took place on February 2, 1872 in the Teatr Wielki (Warsaw) with the line-up E. Suszyński (as Maurycy), M. Wojakowska (as Beata), J. Prochazka (as Sir Max Pepperton), A. Kozieradzki (Hans), H. Majeranowska (Dorota), A. Ziółkowski (as Volsey) W. Rybicka (as Agata) and A. Grabowska (as Urszula).

reception

After the premiere, the Warsaw courier Codzienny judged on February 3, 1872: “The long awaited new opera [...] was premiered yesterday. Like all of our composer's operas, Beata was received with great sympathy by the audience. […] This opera is a comical one in all of its dimensions, but the situations do not necessarily make you laugh ”. The Gazeta Polska stressed on the same day, how tiny the ideas of the libretto are and how much the drama at the plant lacked. After a few more performances, on February 14, 1872 in Gazeta Warszawska , the first obvious attack on this operetta followed: “[…] If you listen to this opera, which was pretended to be comical, you could really cry because of the poor idea of the Mr. Chęciński and even more because of the flatness and bad taste of concepts that have to replace wit. [...] "
