Beata Maria Vergine Addolorata a piazza Buenos Aires (Latin: Beatae Mariae Virginis Perdolentis ad forum Bonaerense ) is a titular church in Rome . The namesake is Mater Dolorosa ("Mother of Sorrows"). It is the national church of Argentina , the first national church of a Latin American country, and the home parish for the Argentine congregation in Rome. It is located on Viale Regina Margherita in the Trieste district . It is part of the parish association with the parish of Santa Maria della Mercede e Sant'Adriano .
history
The church was built on the initiative of José León Gallardo with donations. The foundation stone was laid on July 9, 1910 by the wife of the Argentine President Roque Sáenz Peña . In 1915 it was declared the National Church of Argentina. In 1924 the first mass was celebrated in the unfinished building and the main initiator José León died. His brother Ángel continued the construction, but in 1929 gave ownership of the church to the Argentine bishops. The order of the Mercedarians took over the administration on behalf of the bishops and set up their headquarters here. Construction was delayed by the First World War . In 1930 the completion and the parish fair took place. In 1932 a parish was established. The seat of the parish was moved to Sante Felicita e Bonosa in Via Tirso in 1934 and to Santa Marai della Mercede e Sant'Adroiano in 1958. In 1965 the Mercedarians decided on a new generalate, Nostra Signora del Carmelo dei Mercedari . Pope Paul VI elevated the church on June 7, 1967 to a title church of the Roman Catholic Church . In 1989 the Mercedarians gave up the administration due to a lack of appointments. Since then the Argentine Bishops' Conference has taken over the administration and appoints diocesan priests as administrators here.
