The church Beata Vergine della Creta (also Holy Virgin of Crete) is a pilgrimage church (it. Santuario ) in Castellazzo Bormida in Italy. It is dedicated to Beata Vergine della Creta , who has been the patron saint of motorcyclists since 1947 . In 1947 Pope Pius XII awarded with the papal bull of the "Beata Vergine della Creta" the title "patroness of motorcyclists".

Since 1946 there has been a meeting of motorcyclists from all over the world who take part in a trade fair on the second Sunday in July . For this event, the gates of the church are also opened to motorbikes. In the rotonda , a domed rotunda built around a pillar in the church building, on the side walls and in the sacristy of the church, votive tablets , motorcycle helmets and motorcycles are exhibited, which testify to the gratitude of the donors to the Madonnina , Beata V. della Creta .

history

The first building in this place of pilgrimage was a chapel that kept an image of the Blessed Virgin of Crete. Giovanni Viola from Castellazzo built it in 1631 after a plague epidemic that struck all of Europe. The chapel was demolished in 1764, but for the residents of Castellazzo it always remained a sacred place dedicated to the Madonna, honored with votive offerings. Soon a wooden cross was erected again, followed by a brick pillar with the painting of the Madonna della Creta, which quickly found its place in popular veneration. Even if the picture was later returned to S. Carlo, the original place of storage. Shortly afterwards a small church was built (1802–1848), but it was also demolished again, followed by the round square around the pillar and a temporary chapel. The actual pilgrimage church, the Beata Vergine della Creta e delle Grazie , was only consecrated towards the end of the 19th century .

architecture

The three-aisled church with transept, domed crossing and semicircular presbytery was built in the neo- baroque style. The building was completed and inaugurated in 1905, the facade and the two bell towers were completed in 1924. The construction work towards the end of the last century was led by the architect Giuseppe A. Boidi Trotti based on the plans of the architect Caselli from Alessandria . The facade was designed by Girolamo Buscaglia. Presented the facade is a portico with four, on high pedestals aufgesockelten Corinthian columns . The architrave bears the Latin inscription: VENITE IN DOMUM MATRIS VESTRǼ. The triangular gable of the portico contains a relief based on the miraculous image : a crowned Madonna and Child, flanked by two angels.
