Obermarkersdorf basin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Obermarkersdorf basin is a maritime bay that is connected to the crystalline part of the Waldviertel and was created in the Neogene by deposits . It extends southwest of the crystalline high zone around Retz in the area between Obermarkersdorf , Schrattenthal and Waitzendorf .

In addition to small foothills of the Burgschleinitz Formation, mainly pelites of the Zellerndorf Formation occur here, which, with certain restrictions, are suitable for brick production. These were mined and processed in some brickworks in the area together with the overlying loess.

Brickworks in the basin of Obermarkersdorf

In the cadastral municipality of Obermarkersdorf , which today belongs to the municipality of Schrattenthal in Lower Austria , there were two brick kilns.

Brick kiln Obermarkersdorf I

The brick kiln Obermarkersdorf I was built by Ludwig and Wilhelm Köck, who had received permission to build a brick kiln in 1902; these were also named as owners in 1908. In the period between 1940 and 1954, Johann Scherzer was responsible for the operation, which should also mean the end of the brick kiln. As brick characters are GKM for Brothers Koeck Markersdorf, KM for Koeck Markersdorf and J Sch handed down for Johann Scherzer. The plant itself was located in the Reuth corridor on the road to Hofern , about 650 meters after the junction to Rosenau and is now a disused and greened landfill. Although this was definitely a larger facility, it is not shown on any map. In the geological map of the Republic of Austria 1: 50,000 , two breaks are shown at this point, whereby fossil vertebrates were also found. World icon

Brick kiln Obermarkersdorf II

The brick kiln Obermarkersdorf II in the Laimgrube corridor is located northwest between the village and the Breitenmühle, not even 100 meters from the mill. The field name Laimgruben can already be found here in the Franciscan map of 1823 . The brick kiln is likely to have existed in connection with the mill, which was not unusual at the time when the brick-making industry was a manorial privilege. Today there is a barely dented area overgrown with grass. World icon
