The fortified hill settlement Beerenberg is a former settlement from prehistoric times fortified with earthen walls on the plateau of the Beerenberg in Winterthur in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland . It is classified as a cultural asset of regional importance .

location

The hillside settlement was located on a plateau on the Beerenberg plateau in the Wülflingen district at around 590  m above sea level. M. above the former Beerenberg monastery . Since the edge of the plateau has steep flanks, the location was strategically located.

History and description

Little is known about the history of the former hilltop settlement. In the center of the plateau there is said to have been a barrow that was probably destroyed when the forest road was built. A bowl stone mentioned in the 19th century is also considered lost today. On the southern edge of the Beerenberg plateau, prehistoric embankments have been preserved, which originally separated the plateau from the ridge. Since the wall was partially removed during the forest road construction, the individual fillings can be clearly seen in the profile. The bricking of the clay in the uppermost zone suggests that a fire may have occurred in the settlement.
