Begoña Aretxaga

Begoña Aretxaga Santos (born February 24, 1960 in San Sebastián ; died December 28, 2002 in Austin , Texas ) was a Basque -US anthropologist .

Life

Begoña Aretxaga graduated from the University of the Basque Country ( Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea ) with a degree in philosophy and psychology in 1983 and received her PhD in anthropology from Princeton University in 1992. Her doctoral thesis was on nationalism and gender in Ireland. From 1992 to 1993 she taught at Princeton University. She moved to Harvard University , where she was assistant professor of anthropology from 1993 to 1997 and of social sciences from 1997 to 1999 . From 1999 she was a professor at the University of Texas at Austin .

Her research topics included nationalism , political violence , gender studies and sexuality , often related to the political situation in the Basque Country. Her early work Los Funerales en el Nacionalismo Radical Vasco (1989) is considered groundbreaking, she expanded it to achieve a Ph.D. 1992. She regards her second work on Ireland ( Shattering Silence , 1997) as a feminist ethnography . She served on the advisory board of the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno , which posthumously published a collection of her essays in 2005.
