Disability and Development Cooperation eV (bezev) is a non-profit association based in Essen , which has been working for people with disabilities worldwide since 1995.

The organization is committed to a just and social world in which all people have the same development and participation opportunities by promoting inclusive development and strengthening the equal participation of people with disabilities in development policy and humanitarian initiatives. The organization works to improve the living conditions of people with disabilities in various areas, especially in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Bezev is also involved in global learning .

structure

The highest body of the association is the general assembly, which decides on the principles and content of the work. It can also resolve changes to the statutes and appoints the honorary board of directors and the management. The general assembly also receives the statement of accounts (including financial report) from the board and its discharge. The financial report of the board of directors is checked before the annual general meeting by at least one independent cash auditor who is not a member of the board. The board consists of 3 - 5 people, is appointed for a period of 2 years by the general meeting and monitors the work of the management. This leads the day-to-day business and implements the resolutions of the general assembly and the board of directors.

The office is in Essen. The association currently has 9 employees. (As of August 2012)

The organization is mainly financed through project-specific grants from public and private institutions and organizations, as well as donations.

Memberships

The organization is a member of several networks and organizations, such as the Association for Development Policy and Humanitarian Aid of German Non- Governmental Organizations (VENRO), the parity charity Essen , the Eine Welt Forum Essen eV, the Eine Welt Netz NRW , the Mpumalanga Forum NRW and on an international level the Global Partnership on Disability and Development (GPDD)

Subject areas

The organization deals with various issues that affect the lives of people with disabilities in developing countries in a special way. The aim is to make people and political actors in Germany aware of these issues through public relations work and political lobbying. The individual topics are:

Projects and Campaigns

Foreign projects

The organization supports various projects abroad that work to improve the lives of people with disabilities in developing countries. These are in particular:

  • Street children project: “Feira Libre” in Cuenca, Ecuador
  • Professional inclusion of people with disabilities in Mozambique
  • Monika Girls High School in Bagrot, Pakistan
  • School project “Ithemba” in Port Elizabeth, South Africa

Global learning

The organization is committed to ensuring that global learning also takes place in inclusive education and works in the context of individual projects on the creation of inclusive educational materials on topics of global learning. At the same time, the association supports partner schools in campaigns for global learning. Two projects are mentioned here as examples:

  • The self-developed handbook “Football without Borders” provides didactic suggestions and ideas on how global learning can be implemented in schools based on the topic of football. It is assumed that it makes sense and is possible to involve all students in global learning. This also applies to pupils with disabilities.
  • The organization is currently working on an educational project to make global learning on the subject of "climate and climate change" inclusive. The educational material that the association creates for this purpose contains basic factual information and didactic ideas for inclusive educational offers, for school and extracurricular areas.

Voluntary service

Since 2008 the organization has been a recognized sending organization as part of the development volunteer service weltwärts , which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The organization is of the opinion that the participation of people with disabilities must be guaranteed in all areas of society and that people with disabilities also have a right to become socially active. The project “weltwärts all inclusive” was launched in 2011. This is intended to encourage young people with and without disabilities to do voluntary service abroad. The aim is to enable people with disabilities as well as people without disabilities to do voluntary service abroad.

The organization looks for a suitable placement for the applicants, in which they can contribute their skills and which corresponds to their individual needs. Furthermore, bezev prepares the volunteers for their assignment and supports them pedagogically during their voluntary service. Bezev also looks for solutions if, for example, personal assistance is required for the period.

Campaigns (selection)

The organization is the initiator of a large number of campaigns in which interested parties can also actively participate. Examples of this include:

  • the disability and development program - what does it matter to me? , with which bezev would like to attract people with and without disabilities who are interested in the subject of “disability and development”. bezev provides barrier-free background information and action proposals with which interested parties can get involved in their personal or professional environment. In addition, bezev supports them in the preparation and implementation of their ideas and actions.
  • The traveling exhibition “Development is for everyone” shows how people with disabilities are included in development projects and programs and thus contribute to the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals.
